UAE in space: Astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri arrives on the ISS

The Emirati made history as he arrived at the International Space Station early on Thursday morning.

The first Emirati astronaut was beginning his first day on board the International Space Station on Thursday after floating through the hatch at 2.20am UAE time.

Maj Hazza Al Mansouri greeted the world with a 'salaam alaikum' from the ISS, eight hours after a historic blast off from Earth.

"We are grateful to have reached the ISS and ilhamdillah everything is good," he said in Arabic.

"The Earth is beautiful from this place. It is small but I can see a small part of it.

"God protect you. Send my regards to the people of the UAE."

He and fellow astronauts, Russian commander Oleg Skripochka and Nasa’s Jessica Meir, embraced the existing six crew and gathered together in front of the live stream cameras to Earth, beaming with pride.

Major Al Mansouri will stay on for eight days, returning to Earth on October 3.

In his eight days Maj Al Mansouri will perform a series of experiments, question-and-answer sessions with young people in the UAE and present a live tour of the station in Arabic. He will also undergo brief medical experiments to study the effects of space on his body.

After docking about midnight the Soyuz hatch will open at 2am, allowing the crew on to the ISS.

During his eight-day trip, Maj Al Mansouri will make dinner for his crew mates with traditional Emirati food flown up in cans.

  • Thursday, September 26, he will carry out a series of science in space experiments and take part in a short radio call at 11.33pm
  • Friday, September 27, experiments include time perception in microgravity and a live session at 2.30pm UAE time lasting about 20 minutes
  • Saturday, September 28, science in space experiments followed by a cardiovector session. This is a study that astronauts undergo to understand more about cardiology in space and the stresses placed on the body
  • Sunday, September 29 - tour of the station in Arabic. Space chiefs hope to educate and inspire millions of young Arabs as Maj Al Mansouri takes them around the ISS. There will also be a live chat session between 2.40pm and 3pm.
  • Monday, September 30, another live session at 4.14pm, followed by further experiments.
  • Tuesday, October 1, a further live session with young people followed by experiments involving fluids in space
  • Wednesday, October 2, more experiments and preparations for the Soyuz craft to undock
  • Thursday, October 3, undock at 11.34pm to descend to Earth. Maj Al Mansouri will return to Earth, landing at one of three sites in Kazakhstan.
  • On board the ISS already are Russians Alexey Ovchinin and Alexander Skvortsov, Nasa astronauts Christina Koch, Nick Hague and Andrew Morgan and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.

**Hague and Ovchinin are scheduled to wrap up a mission of more than 200 days on October 3 and return to Earth with Maj Al Mansouri

The most deadly creature: the Box Jellyfish

It seems to go without saying that the most poisonous, deadliest and meanest of all the jellyfish inhabits Australia. The variety of box jellyfish known as the sea wasp or marine stinger is widely regarded as one of the most deadly creatures on earth. Along with other box jellies they have been responsible for at least 5,568 deaths recorded since 1954. The Australian variety causes around 1 death a year on average with a further 100 in South East Asia.

As with so many of the deadliest animals it is said that from certain angles there are skull-like marking – in this case on the largely transparent bell. The 15 tentacles can reach up to 3 metres (10 ft) long and each is covered in around half a million venom infused, microscopic darts. It is estimated that each animal contains enough venom to kill 60 adult humans. The venom acts fast too and it can kill within minutes causing cardiovascular collapse. It also attacks the nervous system and skin cells.

The actual sting has been compared to being branded with a red hot iron. It is said that the pain can be so severe that it may result in shock leading to drowning or heart failure on its own. Whilst stings are often survived pain can continue for weeks and there may be permanent scarring resembling whip marks across affected areas.

With 24 eyes, four brains and an impressive 60 anal regions (whatever they are) the box jelly fish are definitely an advanced and formidable creature.

Telecoms operator du confirms beIN Sports network suspended in the UAE

Dubai-based telecoms operator du has confirmed that it has suspended transmission of the Qatar-owned beIN Sports network across its cable television services after customers took to social media on Monday evening to complain about an interruption in the service.

“We would like to confirm that the service of beIN Sports are currently suspended. Our customer service teams will be in touch with all the affected customers,” du said in a statement.

The company did not clarify whether the suspension of service is in relation to the ongoing Qatar crisis, in which the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and the Maldives have cut ties with the GCC member over claims that the country supports terrorist organisations.

Customers who attempt to access beIN Sports channels via their du cable box receive a blue screen stating “This channel is currently unavailable”.

Etisalat customers report receiving the same notice, however the UAE state-owned telecoms firm has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.

The beIN Sports website has also subsequently been blocked by both the telecoms operators in the UAE.

Part of the larger Al Jazeera network of channels, beIN Sports holds the exclusive broadcasting rights to a number of major international sporting tournaments including the UEFA Champions League, English Premier League, La Liga, Formula 1 Grand Prix and the NBA, amongst others.

The UAE has also blocked the Al Jazeera TV channel and website, while Saudi Arabia has also revoked the media group’s licence in the kingdom.

Why Gordon Ramsey never lets his kids fly first class

Gordon Ramsay is known the world over for his exquisite food and his fiery television personality. His hard work and dedication to his craft has increased his net worth to an estimated $54 million, according to Forbes.

But don’t let his money fool you. Ramsay and his wife, Tana, may enjoy a few of the finer things in life, but they are working hard to ensure their children know the value of hard work.

“I’ve never been really turned on about the money,” Ramsay recently told The Telegraph. “That’s not my number one objective, and that’s reflected in the way the kids are brought up.”
Gordon Ramsay and his family
Ramsay added that he and his wife are so strict when it comes to not spoiling their children that when they travel together, their four kids — Matilda, 15, Jack and Holly, 17, and Megan, 18 — must make the journey in coach, while their parents enjoy the high life in first class.

“They don’t sit with us in first class. They haven’t worked anywhere near hard enough to afford that. At that age, at that size, you’re telling me they need to sit in first class? No, they do not. We’re really strict on that,” he said. “I turn left with Tana and they turn right and I say to the chief stewardess, ‘Make sure those little f------ don’t come anywhere near us, I want to sleep on this plane.' I worked my f------ a--- off to sit that close to the pilot and you appreciate it more when you’ve grafted for it.”

Each child, Ramsay added, is given about $50 a week to pay for their own phones and their bus fare. In addition to financial responsibilities, each of the children also learned how to cook so they understand how to feed themselves.

“They all cook as a life skill as opposed to a career,” Ramsay said. “I never want to put that onus on them. I don’t want them with a badge, going into a kitchen [with people] thinking that’s Ramsay’s daughter or that’s Ramsay’s son.”

On top of sitting in coach and having to cook despite having a world-class chef for a father, the Ramsay kids will also have to forge their own fortunes. As Ramsay said, his money is "certainly not going to them."

"I’ve been super lucky, having that career for the last 15 years in the US. Seriously, it has earned a fortune and I’ve been very lucky, so I respect everything I’ve got," he said.

UAE is the second safest country in the world

The UAE has been ranked the second safest country in the world by the World Economic Forum (WEF), up one position from 2016.

WEF has profiled 136 countries for safety and security and the UAE fell right behind Finland and also won the highest spot in the Gulf region.

The UAE also holds the title for the third best air transfer infrastructures in the world, in both connectivity and the quality of its services. It has recorded a surge in visitors in the past two years, welcoming 14.4 million international visitors in 2015, four million more than 2013 and 2014. Dubai alone reached a staggering 14.9 million tourists in 2016.

Dubai is now the fourth most visited city in the world and tourists spend more in the emirate compared to any other destination. Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing revealed that at this rate, Dubai could be achieving its goal of 20 million visitors by 2020.  Even Abu Dhabi is showing signs of competitiveness as it is now the third fastest-growing city in the world and tops in the Middle East with a 19.8 growth rate.

The UAE has always been well known for making its residents and tourists feel safe at any time of the day. A recent report by the RTA uncovered possessions found in its ‘lost and found’ by Dubai taxis. The most precious items were a handbag with $20,000 inside and up to 44kg of gold in two separate occasions. The items were all returned to their rightful owners.

Popular holiday destinations such as the United Kingdom and the United States took some of the lowest rankings for safety, coming in at 78th and 84th.

Other countries in the Middle East that rounded up the top 10 for safety and security included Oman, which came in fourth, and Qatar, which filled in the 10th spot.

France election fears ease as polls suggest Macron will beat Le Pen

Concerns over the French presidential election seemed to have eased slightly on Monday with the yields on the 10-year French bond falling.

The yield on the 10-year government bond dropped to 0.881 percent on Monday morning – the lowest level seen in the last month.

"The slight deterioration in exit polls for Marine Le Pen in the run-off ballot helps stabilizing market sentiment," Norbert Wuthe, senior analyst at BayernLB, told CNBC via email.

This is "further supported by the news that the two socialist candidates won't form a coalition," he added.

Until now, investors have been concerned about the growing support for the far-right leader Marine Le Pen and the outcome of the French vote, which takes place over two rounds in April and May.

The fact that the far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon and the socialist runner Benoit Hamon haven't managed to form an alliance reduces the chances that there will be a final round with both far-left and far-right candidates.

"It's all closely linked to the probability of a Marine Le Pen victory in the final two candidate Presidential round. That would be the horror scenario for the markets and the EU given her radical euro-exit policies," Jan Randolph, head of sovereign risk at IHS Markit, told CNBC about Monday's market moves.

Polls released over the weekend have shown that the centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron is well placed to beat Le Pen in the second round and become the next president of France.

A poll published by the newspaper Le Figaro showed Macron winning the second round against Le Pen with 58 percent of the votes. Another poll conducted by Odoxa/Dentsu-Consulting said Macron would beat Le Pen with 61 percent against 39 percent.

The good polling numbers for the independent runner Macron follow the announcement of the centrist Francois Bayrou that he would join forces with the former economy minister. Bayrou is a veteran in French politics, which could help the 39-year-old Macron winning the confidence of some French voters.

Macron announced Monday plans to slash government spending by 60 billion euros ($63.5 billion) and cut 120,000 public-sector jobs. He also unveiled intentions to reduce some taxes and support green energy investments.

"However, we do expect a yield increase in the second half of the week when increased euro zone inflation numbers and duration heavy French supply will weigh on the market," Wuthe added.

The Indian Caste System

Although many Hindus subscribe to the belief that one is born into a certain caste this belief is not supported by their scriptures. The caste system in India has degenerated into a system falsely recognizing men born in Brahmin families as Brahmins, even though they don’t exhibit the qualities of Brahmins. This has caused so many problems.

“Brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas and sudras are distinguished by the qualities born of their own natures in accordance with the material modes, O chastiser of the enemy.

“Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness–these are the natural qualities by which the brahmanas work.

“Heroism, power, determination, resourcefulness, courage in battle, generosity and leadership are the natural qualities of work for the ksatriyas.

“Farming, cow protection and business are the natural work for the vaisyas, and for the sudras there is labor and service to others.

“By following his qualities of work, every man can become perfect. Now please hear from Me how this can be done.

“By worship of the Lord, who is the source of all beings and who is all-pervading, a man can attain perfection through performing his own work.

“It is better to engage in one’s own occupation, even though one may perform it imperfectly, than to accept another’s occupation and perform it perfectly. Duties prescribed according to one’s nature are never affected by sinful reactions.” (From Bhagavad-gita 18th chapter)

So the Vedas recognize different people have different skills and qualifications, but it is no by birth, it is by guna [qualification] and karma [work]. So if someone born of a sudra [worker] father becomes qualified [guna] and works as [karma] a brahmana he should be accepted as a brahmana… In the same way if the son of a brahmana doesn’t have the qualifications of a brahmana or work as a brahmana then he is not a brahmana. There are so many examples of this in the Vedic scriptures.

The current Indian system is something like accepting the sons of supreme court judges as supreme court judges… It’s nonsense. They have to be qualified, they have to attend the university and pass the course, then they have to work under a qualified judge and get the practical experience, then they may be able to become supreme court judges…

So there is actually nothing stopping anyone from bettering his position in the Indian system in the scriptures… But also there is no need for everyone to strive to be supreme court judges. Anyone, from any social position can be liberated by performing his own work…

You have the same system in America. You have intellectuals [brahmanas], you have administrators and military men [ksatriyas], you have businessmen and farmers [vaisyas] and you have workers. The Vedic system just recognizes these groups, that’s all. It’s quite natural.

It is true that on takes his birth according to his previous karma [activities] so one gets birth in a Brahmin’s family because of his past activities. So mostly the son of a Brahman has the potential to become a Brahmin. But it requires training. And it requires the Brahman father to be actually a qualified Brahmin… But in any case the training and the proper observation of the samskaras [purificatory ceremonies] is required… It’s not automatic at birth as is generally accepted now.

prapya punya-krtam lokan
usitva sasvatih samah
sucinam srimatam gehe
yoga-bhrasto ‘bhijayate

“The unsuccessful yogi, after many, many years of enjoyment on the planets of the pious living entities, is born into a family of righteous people, or into a family of rich aristocracy.” (Bhagavad-gita 6.41)

These days, in Kali-yuga, the samskaras are generally not performed or not properly performed and the gurukuls, the training schools for the boys, are no longer in operation… So there is generally no training and also no purificatory ceremonies… So these sons of Brahmins who have no brahminical training have to be called “dvija-bandhus” or friends of the Brahmins… Unless they actually have the qualities of Brahmins and work as Brahmins they can’t be called a Brahmin. You may even be qualified as a lawyer educationally but if you don’t practice, if you don’t work as a lawyer, no one will accept you as a lawyer.

The qualities of a Brahmin are given in the Bhagavad-gita:

samo damas tapah saucam
ksantir arjavam eva ca
jnanam vijnanam astikyam
brahma-karma svabhava-jam

“Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness–these are the natural qualities by which the brahmanas work.” (Bhagavad-gita 18.42)

>2) It is practicable. It is immediately apparent who belongs to what caste.
> If my father belongs to a given caste, I know that that caste is my own.

Yes. That is there. But because one’s father is a supreme court judge one is not automatically a supreme court judge… He may have a good opportunity to become one. His father can help him, all the reference books are in his house, he is hearing about the law all the time… But he has to become qualified, he has to go to school, study the books, pass the exams, work as an apprentice under a qualified judge… If you just let any son of any supreme court judge sit in the supreme court that would be the end of the supreme court…

If someone, on the other hand, has a businessman as his father but he develops an interest in the law, attends the university, passes the exams, etc. If he develops the qualities and works as a lawyer, then one has to accept him as a lawyer, even though his father is a businessman. It is his guna [qualities] and karma [work] that are important, not his birth.

>Some individuals have said the traditional system is in fact a perversion

>abilities and/or inclinations. In such a system, is caste any more
>meaningful than the idea that we all fit in some fashion into the divine
>plan? Is caste useful any longer as an organizing principle for society?

Yes. There are three modes of material nature, [goodness, passion and ignorance] and everyone of us is associating with material nature in a certain way. It is that mixture of our association with the modes of nature that determines our “caste”. It is undobutedly influenced by our parents guna and karma, but we can change it… One in the mode of goodness is a Brahmin, one in the mode of passion is a ksatriya, one in the mixed modes of passion and ignorence is a vishya and one in the mode of ignorance is a sudra. This system is everywhere, even in America. Unless it is recognized social interaction and the smooth running of a society become very difficult. It is true that certain people are suited to performing certain tasks… Someone has a very good brain, he can think analytically very nicely, so he can advise the government, he can be a judge in a court of law…

But if you put someone with no brain and little analytical thinking ability in that position he will not be very successful… Society will suffer…

This is one of the main problems in our society now [both in India and in the US]… No one knows who is who and so many jobs which should be being performed by Brahmins and ksatriyas are being done by sudras… It is said kalo sudra sambhavah, “In the age of Kali everyone is a sudra.” So it is a very difficult time. Mostly people are sudras, there may be a few vaisyas [businessmen] but almost no ksatriyas or Brahmins… This is the problem. We are not training them. The intelligent people are available, but instead of training them as Brahmins and ksatriyas we are training them as technologists. But these are sudra jobs…

>Furthermore, is there any restriction on my declaring myself to be whichever
>cast I wish to be? Is there any authority which can bar any person from
>declaring himself a Brahmin? If everyone chooses to adopt the “highest”
>caste, has the idea become a meaningless concept?

This is the biggest problem! Every sudra wants to be called a Brahmin! But they don’t want to follow the principals of brahminical life. In the Vedic age it was the kings duty to see that everyone claiming to be a Brahmin was qualified in terms of guna [qualities] and karma [work]. This safety mechanism has to be there otherwise unqualified “Brahmins” will spoil everything… It has happened in India so now many Indians want to get rid of the caste system altogether, because it has become a system being used by a few to exploit the others… But it is better to correct the system than throw it out. But where are the qualified Brahmins? That is the difficulty… So we should start training some. Srila Prabhupada wanted us to start “Varnasrama Colleges” to train Brahmins and ksatriyas… but it has not happened yet… But these colleges hold the key to the success of society in the future.

varnasramacaravata purusena parah puman
visnur aradhyate pantha nanyat tat-tosa-karanam

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Visnu, is worshipped by the propper execution of prescribed duties in the system of varna and asrama. There is no other way to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One must be situated in the institution of the four varnas and asramas.” (Visnu Purana 3.8.9)

But one also has to consider:

dharmah svanusthitah pumsam visvaksena-kathasu yah
notpadayed yadi ratim srama eva he kevalam

“The occupational activities a man performs according to his own position are only so much useless labour if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the Personality of Godhead.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.8)

All things considered, Kali-yuga is a very difficult time for spiritual life and there are many faults. If despite all the faults we chant the holy names of the Lord (Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare) then everything will be perfect…

hare nama hara nama hare namiava kevalam
kalau nasty eva nastya eva nastya eva gatir anyatha

“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.”

Thank you. Hare Krishna!

Theresa May takes stand against Saudi regime by not wearing headscarf - ignoring Foreign Office advice

Theresa May has taken a stand against Saudi Arabia's ultra-conservative regime by not wearing a headscarf - going against official Foreign Office advice.

The Prime Minister, in a dark blue trouser suit, made sure she had her wrists and ankles covered, in accordance with strict dress codes for women in Saudi Arabia.

But her choice of outfit as she arrived on Tuesday afternoon was contrary to Foreign Office guidelines, which state: “Women should wear conservative, loose-fitting clothes as well as a full length cloak (abaya) and a headscarf.”

Mrs May won widespread praise on Twitter, with users saying they were “proud you have not bowed down” to the regime, and that “secular women are equal and free”.

Britain’s only other female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, wore a long robe and a hat that covered most of her hair when she made an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Members of the Royal family also abide by the Foreign Office’s advice when they visit the strict Muslim kingdom.

There is, however, no law requiring foreign visitors to cover their heads, and Mrs May is by no means the first visiting foreign VIP to go bare-headed.

Michelle Obama left her head uncovered when she visited Saudi Arabia with President Barack Obama in 2015 to pay respects following King Abdullah’s death.

Condoleezza Rice, the former US Secretary of State, also went bare-headed on the same trip.

Before she arrived in Saudi Arabia, Mrs May had said she hoped her visit would show “what women can achieve”.

Iran's President Rouhani visited Russia: another step to a Multipolar World

The significance of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Russia on March 27-28 goes far beyond the bilateral relationship. Iran is one of the main actors in Syria and Iraq. It has an importance place in the geopolitical plans of US President Donald Trump. Its relationship with Russia is an important factor of international politics. The future of the entire Middle East depends to a great extent on what Russia and Iran do and how effectively they coordinate their activities.

Less than two months are left till the presidential election in Iran. The presidential race formally starts on April 17 and Rouhani has a good chance to win. True, the country’s foreign policy at the strategic level is defined by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but the executive branch of the government led by president implements it. The spiritual leader does not pay visits to other countries but Russian President Vladimir Putin met him in Tehran last year – the second time in the recent 17 years.

This was Rouhani's first official visit to Russia and the first time he and Putin met within a bilateral framework. The trip took place against the background of growing partnership as both countries have become leading forces of the Astana process that made Iran, Russia and Turkey guarantors of the Syrian cease-fire.

True, the cooperation in Syria is of utmost importance but there is each and every reason to believe that Russia and Iran will have to join together in an attempt to settle the conflict in Afghanistan. As a regional superpower, Iran will gain much by coordinating activities with Russia in that country after the US withdrawal that seems to be inevitable. Such cooperation would become a game-changing factor with far-reaching consequences for the region from the Mediterranean to Pakistan.

The emerging triangle, including Russia, Iran and Turkey, becomes an alliance, could reshape the region. A ceasefire in Syria reached as a result of the Astana process led by the «big three» would reduce the clout of the US, the UK and France. Actually, their influence has already been diminished. The neighboring states will see that progress can be achieved without the «traditional players» representing the West.

Russia is the country that can debunk the myth that the Middle East is threatened by a «Shia threat» emanating from Tehran. It can use its close and friendly relations with leading Sunni states – Egypt, Jordan, the UAE and, perhaps, Saudi Arabia – to play the stabilizing role of mediator between the Shia and Sunni camps. Russia has a unique position to act as an intermediary between Iran and Israel – something nobody else can do.

It’ll take years to heal the wounds and mitigate the contradictions between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Today, the West does not enjoy the clout it once had there. The borders drawn by Western countries caused many conflicts; direct military interventions made them lose trust and support. Under the circumstances, Russia is not exactly an outside actor. Moscow needs peace and stability in the region. This goal can be achieved in tandem with Turkey and Iran. Iraq and Syria can join the trio after they overcome the devastating results of wars. It makes the cooperation with Tehran an issue of paramount importance for Russia.
The bilateral relationship is going to be strengthened by large-scale economic projects.

Despite the importance of foreign policy issues, the talks mainly focused on prospects for deepening trade, economic and investment cooperation, including under large joint projects in energy and transport infrastructure. More than ten major trade and economic agreements were signed during the visit. Russia has already pumped about one billion euros into Iran' railway network, with serious financial injections into bilateral projects yet to be implemented.

Exports to Iran stand at only around 1 percent of Russian foreign trade, but a trade surplus and the existence of a large market for Russian manufactured goods make Iran an important partner. The bilateral trade grew by 60 percent from $1.2 billion in 2015 to almost $2 billion in 2016.

The resumption of weapons deliveries and participation in infrastructure projects financed by Russian loans have led to the doubling of exports of non-energy products from Russia to Iran. The first batch of S-300 air defense systems was delivered in April 2016.

Russia has agreed to provide Iran with a loan of $2.2 billion for infrastructure projects involving Russian companies. It is planned to build a power plant and enhance generation at another in Iran in a contract worth several billion dollars. Under an agreement signed between the two sides, the Russians will improve efficiency at the Ramin power plant in Khuzestan province to 50-55% from 36% now. Another Russian company will build a 1,400-megawatt power plant in the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas in Hormuzgan province. Russian truck manufacturer Kamaz plans to export 300 trucks in 2017, GAZ signed a memorandum with the Iranian authorities for the supply of 900 buses.

Russia’s role in reaching the Iran nuclear deal, the cooperation in Syria and the allegiance to the policy of rapprochement declared by President Putin provide ample evidence of Moscow’s desire to boost the bilateral ties.

A momentous event to take place this year will provide an impetus to the development of Russia-Iran relations. Tehran is expected to become a full-fledged member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) this June. Iran also has expressed interest in signing a trade agreement with the Eurasian Union.

Russia and Iran are united by common goals and interests. The development of relations between the two great powers is a significant contribution into creating alternative poles of power to change the world for the better.

Gold Mine Wells vs Oil Wells

Gold mine well in Russia. This gold well has a depth of 4 km. The width of the well is 0.8 m. Despite the impressive size of the well, gold mining there is limited by the person's physical capabilities. If lowered further, it can be dangerous for a person because of the high load on the body associated with high temperature, humidity, logistics and the possibility of seismic activity. Fortunately for the oil industry, it does not have such limitations associated with the physical condition of a person, so oil companies can drill deeper. We represent the deepest wells in the world.

  1. Chayvo Z-44 (Russia, 13 km) The world's deepest oil well, known as the Chayvo Z-44, goes to a depth of about 13 km, equivalent to 15 heights of Burj Khalifa, the tallest skyscraper in the world. This depth is also twice the record altitude in a balloon. A total of 2.3 billion barrels of oil is expected to be produced in the wells on this shelf. Before Chayvo well Z-44 well and other similar wells were drilled, the leading position was occupied by the famous Kola superdeep borehole located in the western part of Russia.

  1. OP-11 (Russia, 12 345 m) January 2011 was marked by a message from the company Exxon Neftegas that the drilling of the longest well with a large departure from the vertical is nearing completion. OR-11, located on the Odoptu field, also set a record for the length of the horizontal trunk - 11,475 meters.

The perpetrators were able to complete work in just 60 days. The total length of the OP-11 well at the Odoptu field was 12345 meters (7.67 miles), thereby setting a new world record for drilling wells with a large vertical bottom hole (BOV). OR-11 also took first place in the world by the distance between the face and the point of drilling horizontally - 11,475 meters (7.13 miles). ENL Company performed drilling of a record well in just 60 days using the technology of high-speed drilling and integrated drilling quality control developed by ExxonMobil, achieving the highest drilling performance in every foot of the OR-11 well. Drilling_russia3. BD-04A (Qatar, 12 289 m)

In May 2008, a geological exploration well with a length of 12,289 m was drilled by Maersk in Qatar at the Al-Shaheen oil field. The length of the horizontal barrel was 10,902 m. The BD-04A was drilled in just 36 days and used the GSO Rig 127 drilling rig of Transocean for this purpose. Transocean got even more notoriety in April 2010 after the Deepwater Horizon oil platform disaster in the Gulf of Mexico: the company was the operator of this well under a contract with BP.

  1. The Kola Superdeep (USSR, 12 262 m) It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as "the deepest human invasion of the earth's crust." When, in May 1970, a lake with a difficult-to-pronounce name, Vilgiskodeoivainjärvi, began drilling, it was assumed that the well would reach a depth of 15 kilometers. But because of high (up to 230 ° C) temperatures had to collapse.

The well allowed to obtain a number of unique scientific data. In particular, with its help, a two-layer model of the structure of the earth's crust was questioned. At the moment, the Kola well is mothballed.

  1. Bertha Rogers (United States, 9583 m) Another ultra-deep well created in the area of the Anadarko oil and gas basin in Oklahoma in 1974. Thanks to the use of the newest equipment and the rejection of core sampling, drilling took only 502 days from Lone Star company and was stopped when sinkers came across a deposit of molten sulfur. Work cost $ 15 million.

  1. Baden Unit (United States, 9159 m) Well drilled by Lone Star near Anadarko. Its development began in 1970 and lasted for 545 days. The wellhead was equipped with a blowout preventer, designed for a pressure of 105.5 mPa. In total, 1,700 tons of cement and 150 diamond bits were used for this well. And its full cost cost the company $ 6 million.

  1. Hauptbourung (Germany, 9101 m) The famous Kola well made an indelible impression on the European public. Many countries have started to prepare their projects of superdeep wells, but separately it is worth noting the Hauptborgung well, developed from 1990 to 1994 in Germany. Drilling_russiaThe ultra-deep KTB Hauptbourung well was drilled from 1990 to 1994, it was supposed to reach a depth of 12 km, but due to unpredictably high temperatures it was possible to reach only 9.1 km. Due to the openness of drilling and scientific data, good technology and documentation, the super deep KTV well remains one of the most famous in the world.

  1. Zistersdorf UT2A (Austria, 8553 m) In 1977, in the area of the Vienna oil and gas basin, where several small oil fields were hidden, a Zistersdorf UT1A well was drilled. When at the depth of 7544 m non-recoverable gas reserves were discovered, the first.

When is the Real First Day of Spring — March 20th or 21st?

Traditionally, we’ve celebrated the beginning of spring on March 21, but astronomers and calendar manufacturers alike now say that the spring season starts one day earlier, March 20, in all time zones in North America.

How could the first day of spring change from year to year?

There are a few reasons why seasonal dates can vary from year to year. The first is that a year is not an even number of days and neither are the seasons.

Another reason is that the earth’s elliptical orbit is changing its orientation (skew), which causes the earth’s axis to constantly point in a different direction, called precession. Since the seasons are defined as beginning at strict 90-degree intervals, these positional changes affect the time the earth reaches each 90-degree location in its orbit around the sun.

The pull of gravity from the other planets also affects the location of the earth in its orbit. The current seasonal lengths for the Northern Hemisphere are:

Summer — 93.641 days
Autumn — 89.834 days
Winter — 88.994 days
Spring — 92.771 days

As you can see, the warm seasons, spring and summer, combined are 7.584 days longer than the colder seasons, fall and winter (good news for warm weather admirers). However, spring is currently being reduced by approximately one minute per year and winter by about one-half a minute per year. Summer is gaining the minute lost from spring, and autumn is gaining the half a minute lost from winter. Winter is the shortest astronomical season, and with its seasonal duration continuing to decrease, it is expected to attain its minimum value — 88.71 days — by about the year 3500.

Length of Day Vs. Night

Another complication revolving around the vernal equinox concerns the length of day versus night. We have been taught that on the first days of spring and autumn, the day and night are equal to exactly 12 hours all over the world. Yet, if you check the calendar pages in our Almanac, you will find that this is not so. In fact, our tables tell you that on the days of the spring and fall equinox, the length of daylight is actually longer than darkness by several minutes.

The reason this happens can be attributed to our atmosphere. If the earth was a planet that did not have an atmosphere, then yes, on the equinox days the length of the day and night would be exactly even.

However, our atmosphere acts like a lens and refracts (bends) its light above the edge of the horizon. Put in another way, when you watch the sun either coming up above the horizon at sunrise or going down below the horizon at sunset, you are looking at an illusion – the sun is not really there, but already below the horizon.

As a result, we actually end up seeing the sun for a few minutes before its disc actually rises and for a few minutes after it has actually set. Thus, thanks to atmospheric refraction, the length of daylight on any given day is increased by approximately six or seven minutes.

UAE police uses fake cutout car to stop over-speeding

The UAE police have devised an innovative idea to prevent motorists from speeding on highways.

To deter the motorists from going over the speed limit, the police has put up a full-size cutout of a patrol car on one of the highways, complete with flashing lights.

Videos uploaded on Facebook show the car in a red and white colour scheme, with the number 999 painted on the side. The cutout, 'parked' on the side of the highway, is supported by a black metal frame.

The maximum speed limit on a UAE highway is 120km/hr, on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, but motorists usually touch 140km/hr and above between radars.

Countries such as US, Australia and New Zealand are known to use cutouts of policemen at traffic junctions and public places to keep people from flouting rules, but a cutout car is surely a first.

Friday the 17th – Origins of the Unlucky

You might have heard of the unlucky nature of the number 13, especially when it falls on a Friday in some parts of the world, but in Italy the number 13 is actually a good one!  Except in one very particular situation:  13 people sitting at a table…take a look at DaVinci’s Last Supper and you may understand why…

In Italy the number 17 is avoided and feared, even to familiarly irrational lengths like skipping the number on airplane rows or street addresses.  Friday the 17th is a national day of sfortuna, or bad luck…and you’ll be hard-pressed to find an Italian who can coherently explain their motivation for avoiding travel and important events or decisions this particular day.

But why the number 17? There are a handful of potential reasons:

  • The Pythagorean Greeks considered the number 17 a disgraceful number between two otherwise “perfect” numbers, 16 and 18.
  • The Christian biblical flood (Genesis 7-11) started on the 17th day.
  • In 9 AD the 17th Roman Legion, among others, was brutally defeated by the Germans in Teutoburg.  Some 20,000 Roman soldiers died in this unexpected attack.
  • Confusion in the Middle Ages led to the Roman Numeral for 17, XVII, being associated with the Latin phrase “VIXI” (=”I lived”) seen on ancient tombs.

So why is Friday the 17th especially bad?

Likely because of Friday’s already tainted reputation due to Good Friday, which in the Catholic faith is the day that Jesus was crucified.

So on this Friday the 17th, if you find yourself superstitious, I suggest you grab a bottle of Italian wine and relax safely somewhere inside. After all, wine helps calm the nerves!

Krokodil: Flesh-eating 'zombie' drug

Krokodil is a fairly new drug that has appeared in Russia since 2002. It started showing up in Siberia and has spread throughout the country since then. While several drugs are quickly and harshly addictive and physically damaging, krokodil sets a new standard for fast destruction of mind, spirit and body. In 2013 reports of its use began cropping up in the U.S.

Krokodil Manufacture and Harmful Effects
The medical name for the drug is desomorphine. It is made at home by acquiring codeine, sold over the counter for headaches, and cooking it with paint thinner, gasoline, hydrochloric acid, iodine and the red phosphorous from matchbox strike pads. The resulting liquid is injected into a vein. The high from this drug lasts 90 minutes to two hours, and it takes about a half-hour to make the drug. So a krokodil addict does little other than get the ingredients and cook up the drug.

Migration from Heroin to Krokodil
Russia has a severe problem with heroin addiction, but when a heroin addict can no longer afford that drug, he can make up krokodil which has a stronger kick and costs about a tenth the price. But while the life expectancy of a Moscow heroin addict is four to seven years, the life expectancy of a krokodil addict is just a year or two.

At one meeting of drug enforcement officials, two regional governors reported that krokodil accounts for about half of all addictions and drug-related deaths in their regions. And in some other areas, krokodil has nearly replaced opiates as the drug of choice.

It is estimated that somewhere between a few hundred thousand and a million people are injecting this deadly drug. Between 2009 and 2011, the amount of krokodil seized by law enforcement increased 23-fold. In just the first three months of 2011, 65 million doses were seized.

Why is it Called Krokodil?

If You’ve Ever Thought of Using This Drug….

Krokodil gets its name from the fact that the caustic drug causes an addict’s skin to become green, scaly and bumpy like a crocodile’s. If the drug misses a vein and is injected into flesh, that flesh will develop abscesses. It is common for addicts to develop gangrene and require amputations. The flesh on some body parts affected by krokodil injections will rot off completely, leaving bare bone.

Withdrawal is savage, much worse than heroin. Heroin can cause sickness and pain for up to ten days but withdrawal from krokodil can result in a month of unbearable pain. Extremely strong tranquilizers are used during withdrawal so the addict does not pass out from the pain. Doctors dealing with addicts say that this is the strongest level of addiction and the hardest to cure. If a person does manage to get clean from krokodil, they may be left with permanent damage like a speech impediment, vacant gaze and erratic movements.
